The Author
Derk Cools was born in 1939 in Den Haag / The Haque, the Netherlands. He got his degree in social geography and economics at the University of Utrecht(1958). As a civil servant with the Ministry of Economic Affairs, he developed expertise in regional (economic) planning at home and abroad. Congo

Vandaag luisterde ik naar een voordracht van David van Reybrouck over zijn boek Congo, een geschiedenis. Ineens begreep ik de dekolonisatie in de wereld ooit als ont-europeanisering te hebben ervaren. Na de onafhankelijkheid werd Congo een groot vlot drijvend op de wereldzee, speelbal van grootmachten en de globalisering. Op verzoek sloot de schrijver zijn voordracht af met het gedicht West Vlaanderen van Hugo Claus, waarvan hier de youtube
